In March 2022, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law the Parental Rights in Education bill, better known as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill by its opponents. It aimed to prohibit “classroom discussion about sexual orientation or gender identity in certain grade levels” in Florida’s primary schools.

Tasked to design a book based on an article/topic that resonates with me, I chose Independent’s “What is Florida’s ‘Don’t Say Gay’ Bill?”, written by Alex Woodward. I explore themes of censorship, identity, and concealment through various visual methods, including the incorporation of translucent vellum paper and hide/reveal methods by manipulating the physical page.

The black ink on black paper highlights the themes of censorship and the repression of true identity.
I wanted this booklet to be a physical experience, with the viewer finding hidden elements and surprises with the simple flip of a page.
